Welcome to This Week in Disney History! Can you believe we’re just about 2 weeks away from the Disneyland 60th kick off??? Let’s jump into some history!
May 5th, 2004
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has its official grand opening at Disney’s California Adventure. In addition, on this day one year later (2005) Disney kicks off the Happiest Celebration on Earth, which marks the 50th anniversary of Disneyland. Events during this celebration are similar to what’s coming for the 60th: New shows & attractions.
May 6th, 1940
The Disney Studios finishes moving to it’s new lot in Burbank, CA. The lot is made up of 25 buildings on 51 acres, and is designed with help by Kem Weber.
May 7th, 1988
Lady and the Tramp airs on television for the first time ever!
May 8th, 1926
Actor/Comedian Don Rickles (best known in Disney History for the voice of Mr. Potato Head) is born in Queens, NY. Don not only voiced Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story movies, he’s also the voice of Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story Midway Mania! at DCA & Hollywood Studios.
May 9th, 1941
Disney’s cartoon A Good Time for a Dime featuring Donald Duck is released.
May 10th, 1996
Boy Meets World airs it’s episode “The Happiest Show on Earth” which takes place at Disney World.
May 11th, 1935
The Silly Symphony cartoon “Water Babies” is released.
