With the announcement of Star Wars themed lands at the D23 Expo last month, Disneyland and Walt Disney World fans have been anxiously anticipating more information and possible starting dates for construction on both coasts. Disneyland’s social media team announced that Star Wars will take over the Big Thunder Ranch area of Disneyland (which will be closing permanently on January 10th), and the Disney Parks Blog announced that several attractions and areas of the park will be closed to begin construction on the Star Wars themed land. On January 10th 2016, the following attractions and experiences will be closed for over a year (as quoted on the comments section of the Disney Parks Blog):

  • The Disneyland Railroad, and all of its stations
  • Mark Twain Riverboat and the Sailing Ship Columbia
  • Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
  • Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes
  • “Fantasmic!”

Based on this announcement, we can expect serious construction and limited options in the Frontierland, Rivers of America, and New Orleans Square areas. This may impact people’s experience of that area of the park, so it is suggested that you plan advance if you are visiting any time in 2016 and possibly into 2017. Although the temporary closures sound significant, we are very much looking forward to what Disney and the Imagineers do with Star Wars in the parks and are excited that construction will be starting soon! However, you don’t have to wait until after 2016 to enjoy Star Wars.   Opening at Disneyland park on November 16 will be:
